The lineup is remarkable: trumpeter Donald Byrd, then just 22 years old and freshly emerging on the New York scene; pianist Mal Waldron, whose dark, brooding comping would later make him a favorite accompanist of Billie Holiday; bassist Doug Watkins, a key member of the Jazz Messengers; and drummer Ronald Tucker, a less-recorded but spirited player.
Trivia lovers will enjoy this: although the album is titled "Jackie McLean & Co.," it is sometimes overshadowed by McLean’s later Blue Note classics. Still, original yellow/black label Prestige pressings (with the "fireworks" design) are highly prized among collectors. Another bit of trivia is that Mal Waldron contributed one of the compositions, adding his distinctive harmonic sensibility to the session.
This record represents not only McLean’s early voice but also the collaborative spirit of mid-50s Prestige sessions, where young players gathered, often in Rudy Van Gelder’s Hackensack living room, to create what are now timeless documents of hard bop history.

Album Description
"Jackie McLean & Co." (Prestige PRLP 7087), recorded in 1955, captures the young alto saxophonist Jackie McLean at a crucial stage in his development. At this time, McLean was still strongly influenced by Charlie Parker, yet his biting tone and restless phrasing already hinted at the fiery individuality that would later define his work on Blue Note in the 1960s.The lineup is remarkable: trumpeter Donald Byrd, then just 22 years old and freshly emerging on the New York scene; pianist Mal Waldron, whose dark, brooding comping would later make him a favorite accompanist of Billie Holiday; bassist Doug Watkins, a key member of the Jazz Messengers; and drummer Ronald Tucker, a less-recorded but spirited player.
