The album perfectly captures the essence of a blowing session, where the horn players stretch out on extended solos, pushing and inspiring each other. Griffin’s fiery and rapid-fire phrasing contrasts beautifully with Mobley’s more laid-back, lyrical style and Coltrane’s increasingly searching, harmonically adventurous voice. The tension and interplay among the three tenors make this a landmark recording in hard bop.
Despite its legendary status now, the album wasn’t a huge seller at the time. Blue Note producer Alfred Lion reportedly considered the session a bold experiment, bringing together three very different tenor stylists. Collectors prize original pressings of this LP today, with Lexington Avenue labels and deep groove pressings fetching very high prices on the market. Interestingly, it is also one of the very few albums where Coltrane and Mobley appeared together on the same frontline.

Album Description
Johnny Griffin’s A Blowing Session (Blue Note 1559), recorded in April 1957, is widely regarded as one of the most iconic “tenor battles” in jazz history. The session brought together Griffin with two tenor giants, John Coltrane and Hank Mobley, supported by a stellar rhythm section of Lee Morgan on trumpet, Wynton Kelly on piano, Paul Chambers on bass, and Art Blakey on drums. The album perfectly captures the essence of a blowing session, where the horn players stretch out on extended solos, pushing and inspiring each other.
