Recorded in November 1961, this was Sonny Clark’s final studio album as a leader for Blue Note, and it remains one of his finest achievements. Featuring Charlie Rouse (tenor sax), Tommy Turrentine (trumpet), Butch Warren (bass), and Billy Higgins (drums), the session perfectly balances lyrical phrasing and hard bop drive.
Highlights include Clark’s originals such as “Something Special” and the bluesy “Melody for C,” along with a rare standard in his catalog, “Deep in a Dream,” showcasing his delicate touch.
Collector’s note: Original first pressings with the New York USA label and Plastylite “ear” in the dead wax are highly prized, often reaching four-figure prices in top condition. Long overshadowed by Cool Struttin’, this LP has since been rediscovered as a hard bop masterpiece. Clark’s untimely passing in 1963 makes this album an essential part of his lasting legacy.
