Unlike the denser textures of his earlier sessions, this quartet date feels more open, giving Reece space to stretch out his warm tone and distinctive phrasing. His lyrical side shines in ballads like “Ghost of a Chance,” while uptempo numbers reveal his fiery, hard bop drive. The rhythm section is particularly notable: Art Taylor’s crisp drumming anchors the session, and Bishop Jr. who had only recently reemerged after a long hiatus adds a fresh, modern touch that hinted at his later Blue Note debut.
Though well received by critics, Reece never attained the widespread recognition of contemporaries like Lee Morgan or Freddie Hubbard, and his visibility in the U.S. gradually faded. This, however, has made albums like Soundin’ Off true “hidden gems” for listeners and collectors. Original pressings with the deep groove, RVG stamp, and ear mark are now highly coveted among Blue Note enthusiasts.

Album Description
“Soundin’ Off” (Blue Note 4033, 1960) captures Jamaican-born trumpeter Dizzy Reece at a fascinating turning point in his career. After arriving in New York from London, where he had recorded the acclaimed Blues in Trinity with Donald Byrd and Art Taylor, Reece quickly established himself on the Blue Note roster. Yet Soundin’ Off would be his third and final album for the label, recorded with Walter Bishop Jr. on piano, Doug Watkins on bass, and Art Taylor once again on drums.Unlike the denser textures of his earlier sessions, this quartet date feels more open, giving Reece space to stretch out his warm tone and distinctive phrasing.
